Forward deployed engineer at Palantir: every track compared
Palantir hires forward deployed engineers under several titles, in commercial and government teams. Here is how the tracks differ before you apply.
Endpoints in this guide (8)
Palantir's forward deployed engineer most often appears under the title Forward Deployed Software Engineer (FDSE), which the company also calls a Delta 1,2. It is one of several forward deployed tracks: Palantir's job board also lists AI, infrastructure, reliability, security and enablement variants, next to a separate customer-facing role called Deployment Strategist 2. On October 23, 2026 that board showed 73 openings with Forward Deployed in the title, 49 of them FDSE, and 35 Deployment Strategist openings, three of which also carry Forward Deployed in the title 2. What separates the tracks is less the title than the team: commercial or government, how much you travel, whether a clearance is needed and how much experience the posting asks for. This dossier lays those out side by side from Palantir's own postings and careers pages.

What does a forward deployed engineer do at Palantir?
01#what-does-a-forward-deployed-engineer-do-at-palantir
The job is to sit with a customer, work out the problem and build the solution. The New York posting says FDSEs work side by side with customers, quickly understand their toughest issues, and architect and build solutions on business-critical data and AI 3. The US Government version compares the role to a startup CTO's: small teams, minimal supervision, end-to-end ownership of high-stakes projects, and days that can span architecture talks, large-scale data work, coding a custom web app and speaking with customer executives 5.
The structural point is where the role sits. Palantir's 2019 post by an engineering hiring manager says Software Engineers (Devs) sit in Product Development and own a platform component, while Deltas sit in Business Development and are judged on the customer's goal: a Dev works on one capability for many customers, a Delta on one customer using many capabilities 1. The company's student page repeats the split 11. Deltas quoted in the same post dispute the consultant label, saying they build long-term solutions with customers and do significantly more engineering 1. An FDSE who joined from fintech backend work wrote in 2021 that she had to stop treating the job as an extension of her old one, and that Foundry, Palantir's platform, became her main tool 12. Both accounts are Palantir writing about itself, so read them as the company's pitch.

How do the commercial and government tracks differ?
03#how-do-the-commercial-and-government-tracks-differ
Commercial FDSE postings look lighter on paper. The New York and Chicago postings are hybrid with up to 25% travel and no clearance 3,4, and London is hybrid with 25-50% 13. The non-US postings add their own filters: Munich asks for German fluency plus a clearance or the ability to obtain one, and Seoul asks for fluent Korean and English 14,15.
Government FDSE postings are a different application. The board lists US Government FDSE postings in Washington, D.C., New York, Honolulu, San Diego, Fayetteville, Kitsap, Norfolk and Laurel, mostly on-site, with Fayetteville hybrid and tied to North Carolina 2,20. Each of those eight postings lists a clearance, but the level is not the same everywhere. The D.C. and New York postings ask for an active Top Secret clearance or willingness to obtain or upgrade to one, and the D.C. posting counts logistics, materiel, sustainment, aviation or readiness analysis experience as a plus 5,16. Honolulu and Laurel ask for an active clearance at or above Top Secret, Kitsap and Norfolk for one at or above Secret, and San Diego and Fayetteville for an active clearance or eligibility and willingness to obtain one, without naming a level 17,18,6,7,19,20. A Federal Health and Civilian variant in New York is hybrid and asks for Top Secret or willingness to obtain or upgrade to it 31,2. The specialist teams push further: NATO asks for 70-90% travel across Europe, and the Intel posting asks for an active Full Scope Poly clearance 22,23.
How clearances work shapes your timeline. DCSA, a Defense Department agency that can conduct federal background investigations, says the sponsoring (employing or hiring) agency that starts an investigation decides its level, that you fill out an electronic questionnaire and sign releases, and that supporting documents can include citizenship, residence and employment history 32. Palantir's postings say willingness to obtain, but do not explain how it handles sponsorship. Ask your recruiter before you apply to a role that depends on one.
What is the difference between an FDSE and a Deployment Strategist?
04#what-is-the-difference-between-an-fdse-and-a-deployment-stra
Both face the customer, but the postings divide the work. The New York FDSE posting lists architecture and design decisions, wrangling data at scale, building custom applications and engaging customer stakeholders 3. The Deployment Strategist posting lists meeting customer analysts onsite, finding datasets, building workflows for new user groups, leading training, presenting to executives and feeding field learnings back to product teams, and says Deployment Strategists work with Forward Deployed Engineers to integrate data into pipelines 8.
Do not assume it is a non-technical route into the same job. The New York Deployment Strategist posting lists programming, scripting or statistical package experience as a requirement, while the Washington, D.C. US Government posting calls it a plus 8,28. Travel differs too: 25-75% is required for Deployment Strategists, against up to 25% for New York and Chicago FDSEs 8,3.
Palantir also lists separate Deployment Strategist, Build to Apply postings for US Government locations: Washington, D.C., New York, Fayetteville, Honolulu, San Diego and Colorado Springs 2. In the Washington, D.C. posting you build a workflow with Palantir's Foundry and AIP products in a DevTier account, record a demo video under five minutes and submit within 7-10 days of starting. The posting says this can create potential for expedited consideration and that AI tools are permitted and encouraged while you build 10. On October 23, every Build to Apply title on the board was a Deployment Strategist posting 2.
Can you apply as a new grad or intern?
05#can-you-apply-as-a-new-grad-or-intern
Yes, through separate postings. The commercial New Grad FDSE posting in New York is hybrid, expects 25-50% travel and requires graduating in December 2026 or Spring 2027 29. Palantir's early talent page says those programs are open to students graduating in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027, or people with under six months of industry experience, and that team placement depends heavily on what the interviews reveal about your experience and interests, alongside Palantir's business needs 11. The commercial FDSE internship targets students graduating in December 2027 or Spring 2028 and says interns are handed responsibility from day one rather than a ticket queue 30. A Year at Palantir option is open to freshmen and sophomores as well as juniors and seniors, and asks for hands-on experience applying AI through coursework, projects or internships 33. Eligibility windows differ by posting and country, so read the one you apply to.
How does Palantir's hiring process work for these roles?
06#how-does-palantir-s-hiring-process-work-for-these-roles
Palantir publishes an outline, not a round-by-round script. Its careers page says everyone starts with one or two phone interviews, then an onsite round, in person or virtual, if there is a fit, and that the number and format of interviews is personalized to your skills and the role 9. Its phone interview guide describes calls of 20-45 minutes covering your background and interest in Palantir, plus a coding question for engineering roles, and says Palantir typically gets back to candidates within a week or two at the latest. The page is undated, so treat the timing as a guide 34. The student page says the process differs for FDSE and Software Engineer candidates 11. The London, New Grad and internship postings ask for a resume or CV in PDF format and answers to application questions 13,29,30.
Palantir's own writing shows what the process tests. A Delta quoted in its 2019 post lists technical decomposition first among the skills named: take a high-level problem, break it down and design a solution, from the business problem down to the lines of code 1. Its guide to open-ended questions says it rarely works on problems with a single optimal solution, and advises naming alternatives and trade-offs while still committing to a concrete approach, a working idea first and then expand it 35. The same page says onsite questions cover how you have executed, challenged yourself, motivated others and made judgments, and where you have failed 9. A Palantir employee quoted in a 2020 post says interviewers want to hear about an actual failure and what you learned from it 36. For question-level preparation, use our interview questions guide.
Which Palantir track should you aim for?
07#which-palantir-track-should-you-aim-for
- You code and want to build for one customer at a time: FDSE. Commercial postings in New York and Chicago list no clearance, and government postings do 3,5.
- You have built with LLMs: the Forward Deployed AI Engineer posting asks for past experience building solutions with LLMs and machine learning basics 24.
- You are strongest at running systems: the US Government infrastructure posting centers on operating and upgrading Palantir deployments, automating manual work and an on-call schedule 26.
- You are strongest at framing problems, data and presenting, with some code: Deployment Strategist 8.
Palantir's 2019 post says there is a lot of movement between its product and forward deployed engineering roles. It does not say the same about the other tracks 1.
What can't you tell from the postings?
08#what-can-t-you-tell-from-the-postings
Postings are snapshots. The board can change at any time, and one title repeats across locations, so counts overstate distinct jobs 2. In the sources we read we found no round-by-round FDSE interview details, acceptance rates, headcount for each track or typical split between customer sites and the office. The Delta accounts we cite are individual experiences from Palantir's own blog posts, written between 2019 and 2021. Pay is a snapshot too. On October 23, 2026 the New York and Chicago commercial FDSE postings each stated an estimated salary range of $135,000 to $200,000 a year, and the New York Deployment Strategist posting $110,000 to $170,000 a year. The postings say total compensation may also include restricted stock units, a sign-on bonus and other incentives, and that the estimate excludes the value of any sign-on bonus, benefits and long-term incentives 3,4,8. Other postings state different ranges, such as $135,000 to $145,000 a year for the New York new grad FDSE role 29, so check the range on the posting for your location.

Questions
What is the difference between a Palantir FDE, an FDSE and a Delta?
FDSE stands for Forward Deployed Software Engineer, Palantir's title for the engineer who works with customers. Delta is the internal nickname, which Palantir's 2019 post traces to the days when each Business Development team was named for a NATO alphabet letter. Some titles use Forward Deployed Engineer or name an adjacent track such as AI, infrastructure or reliability. Deployment Strategist is a separate role, listed under a different team label, Echo, on Palantir's job board.
Do you need a security clearance to be a forward deployed engineer at Palantir?
Not for every track. The commercial FDSE postings in New York, Chicago and London that we read do not mention one, while the Munich posting asks for a clearance or the ability to obtain one. The US Government FDSE postings we read each list a clearance, and the level varies by location: Top Secret or willingness to obtain or upgrade to it in Washington, D.C. and New York, an active Secret clearance in Kitsap and Norfolk, and an active Top Secret clearance in Honolulu and Laurel. Some specialist teams ask for more, such as an active Full Scope Poly clearance on the Intel team. The postings we read do not explain how Palantir handles sponsorship, so ask your recruiter.
How many years of experience does Palantir ask for?
It depends on the posting. The commercial FDSE postings in New York and Chicago ask for 1+ years of post-college work experience, and London asks for 6+ months. The New Grad posting in New York requires graduating in December 2026 or Spring 2027, and internships target students. Deployment Strategist postings name no minimum years in the sections we read, but the New York posting lists programming or scripting experience as a requirement.
How much do Palantir forward deployed engineers travel?
The postings give ranges, not promises. New York and Chicago FDSE postings and the AI Engineer posting say up to 25%, London and the New York new grad posting say 25-50%, Tactical Edge says about 25-75%, and the NATO role says 70-90% across Europe. The Washington, D.C. US Government FDSE posting says travel as needed with no percentage. Deployment Strategist postings require 25-75%.
Does Palantir publish pay for forward deployed engineers?
The full-time US postings we read state an estimated salary range. On October 23, 2026 the New York and Chicago commercial FDSE postings said $135,000 to $200,000 a year and the New York Deployment Strategist posting said $110,000 to $170,000 a year. The postings say total compensation may also include restricted stock units, a sign-on bonus and other incentives, and that the estimate excludes the value of any sign-on bonus, benefits and long-term incentives. Other postings differ: the New York new grad FDSE posting said $135,000 to $145,000 a year, internship postings give monthly figures, and the London, Munich, Seoul, NATO and UK Government postings we read showed no range. Ask your recruiter how total compensation is set for the role.
